We find very few Massachusetts vital records for Samuel Kemp and his wife Sarah Foster other than their marriage on 23 May 1662 at Billerica and the births of their nine children. Published books and articles, none with sources, give conflicting information about the parents of this Sarah Foster.

The earliest is an article by Edward Jacob Forster, "Andrew Foster, of Andover, and His Descendants," NEHGR (Jul 1866), 20:227, which says that Sarah was d/o Andrew Foster and wife Ann.

Frederick Clifton Pierce's 1899 Foster Genealogy, p. 1035, says Sarah, daughter of Andrew and Ann Foster of Andover, married Samuel Kemp on 15 Oct 1667.

Meanwhile, The Kemp Genealogy by Arthur J Weise in 1904, page 135, says Sarah Foster was the d/o Sgt Thomas and Elizabeth Foster “of that settlement [Billerica].”

And Carol Clark Johnson's 1970 A Genealogical History of the Clark and Worth Families, p. 404, also identifies Sarah as the d/o Sgt. Thomas Foster and Abigail Wimes who came to Boston in 1634.

Conclusion: Sarah was probably the d/o Andrew Foster whose 1685 will mentioned a daughter Sarah. The 1682 will of Sgt Thomas Foster mentions only his wife (not named), son Joseph Foster, and son-in-law James Frost.
