Sarah Jane's step-daughter, Anna Susan Osborn, remembers her as being "plain mean". Anna's daughter, Ida (Thomas) Sebring related in January of 2002 that she remembers her mother telling her that the twin girls (Anna and Elizabeth) were treated badly by this stepmother. They were not even allowed to go to school like the other children in the family!

The reason that the twins had to go live with their father and step-mother was that their mother, Caroline (Gaddie) Osborn, had to work after divorcing John B. Osborn.
