Sarah Bartlett’s origins have yet to be established. The age quoted at her marriage suggests she was born around 1756. Her first confirmed sighting is on 16th June 1781, when she married William Roper, a husbandman, at Earnley on the Sussex coast. She was said to be 24 years old at the time.

After their marriage, Sarah and William settled in the neighbouring parish of Sidlesham. They had twin boys in 1787, but sadly both died young – they were both buried just five days after their baptism.

Sarah died in 1791, aged about 34. She was buried at Sidlesham on 18th August 1791. William survived her by nearly nineteen years, and remarried in 1795.
