Samuel and his young brother James went to Greene County, Kentucky before 1800. That part became Cumberland County, with Monroe County later formed from Cumberland. He was a Deputy Surveyor. Over time he acquired hundreds of acres of land in both Kentucky and Tennesse. It was while he was surveying in Jackson County, TN that he was murdered by a man by the name of Mitchell who was hunted and hanged for the crime.
He served in his local county militia, possibly in the 3rd Brigade, 7th Reg. from Cumberland County during the war of 1812. His brother James may have also served in the same unit.
