Samuel D. Wallace was born in Botetourt County, Virginia on 28 September 1816, (there is some question about which county he was born in, Botetourt or Augusta) the third child and the first-born son of James Wallace and Catherine "Katie" Newman Wallace.

Samuel is the Grandson of Robert Wallace and Esther Boyd Wallace and of Leroy Newman and Mary Brown Newman; the Great grandson of Samuel Wallace and Elizabeth Jane Archer and of Robert Boyd and Eleanor Porterfield.

Samuel is the brother of Ellen Eleanor Wallace, Marguerite Sarah Wallace, Russell Newman Wallace (wife, Rachel Armstrong and later, wife Mary Margaret Coffman), Frances Virginia "Fannie" Wallace (Mrs. Porterfield "Porter" Glover), Elizabeth Catherine Wallace, Mary Emeline Wallace (Mrs. Addison George Critzer), Adeline H. Wallace (Mrs. Zachariah W. Fry), James Wallace and Hetty Ann Wallace (Mrs. John Guerrant Binford).

On 21 December 1837 Samuel married Mary Ann Cropley in Norfolk City, Virginia. No death record has been found for Mary Ann.

On 13 November 1862 Samuel, listed as a Widower, became the husband of Stacia America Jenkins, whom he married in Rockbridge County, Virginia. Their Marriage Certificate gives her age as 19, although her Headstone date of birth would have her be 16 years of age when they married. He was 46 years of age.

Samuel and Stacey are the parents of Thomas Henry Wallace, Sara Kate "Lula" Wallace (Mrs. Thomas Henry Fry) and Edna C. Wallace.

Samuel Wallace served in the Confederacy during the Civil War, but there is some conflicting information as to which Virginia Regiment he served in, as he also had a cousin with the same name and similar birthdate.

Samuel's Uncle, Moses Wallace and his cousin John McCrory Wallace, built and operated the Wallace Mill in Little Calf Pasture; the Mill still stands today, more than 100 years later. The Wallace family also raised the funds to build the Wallace Mill Bridge, which also stands today, although a new bridge has recently been built to take the place of the original, due to structural failure after more than 100 years.

Samuel and others of the Wallace families were Farmers, but it appears that most of the farming was in raising crops of wheat, oats, corn and barley. There were also a few of the Wallaces who raised stock, such as horses and cattle. They owned a good deal of land around the Calf Pasture area of Augusta County and were among the early settlers who came from Scotland.

Samuel's father, James Wallace, died in 1851; Samuel's mother, Catherine, lived with his brother, Russell Newman Wallace, until her death in 1881.

Samuel D. Wallace died on 15 July 1890. His Widow, Stacia America "Stacey" Jenkins Wallace, continued to operate the farm after Samuel's death; daughter Lula married in 1903 and moved to Botetourt County; Stacey continued to live with her youngest daughter, Edna, who worked as a Seamstress.

Samuel and wife Stacey are buried beside one another in the Bells Valley Methodist Cemetery.
