"27. Dea. Samuel Montague, son of John (7), b. April 2, 1695, in Hadley, Mass. Married, (1) Jan. [or June] 24, 1716, Elizabeth, dau. of Deacon Nathan and Elizabeth [Savage] White of Hadley ... (2) June 13, 1754 Mary, widow of Jonathan Billings, and dau. of Joseph Root. … He was … for some time a selectman, captain in the militia, and always a leading man in the town. He died Jan. 31, 1779, aged 84 years. He was buried by the side of his first wife, in Sunderland, to whose memory he had erected a suitable stone, which is still standing. His own grave was for some years unmarked by a stone, but at a later date, one was erected by his descendants, upon which the date of his death, 1789, is an error; it should be 1779."
