"Lieut. Samuel Merrill was born in Salisbury, Mass., Aug 4 1728, and married Elizabeth, a daughter of Capt. Thomas Bradbury. He settled at Salmon Falls, on land conveyed to him by his father-in-law, in 1753, and remained there during the remainder of his days. He was of a respectable family, was frequently selectman of the town, and filled many important positions. He was an officer at the battle of Bunker Hill; probably saw his first military service as a soldier under Captain Bradbury at the Saco River Blockhouse. He commanded a militia company in Buxton. Many descendants have been men of mark, some of eminence. He died May 4, 1822, and his wife Jan. 18, 1820 aged about 93. He was buried in the churchyard at the Old Corner, but the grave-place is unknown."
