8- Samuel McClung, d. about 1865. He was killed by John Sayles near Buena Vista, Va. Samuel was a kind-hearted man, but was very fond of playing pranks. On one occasion he mounted a sleigh belonging to Mr. Moffett and invited Nathaniel Hill to take a ride with him. Hill innocently accepted the invitation. MofTet, missing huis sleigh, went in search of it. Upon meeting Moffctt in the road very unexpectedly, McClung unhitched the horse from the sleigh and fled, leaving Hill sitting in the sleigh only to discover that he had been made the victim of a practical joke.
Samuel's pranks were finally the cause of his death. He rode up to a shop near his own home, hitched his horse, and for sport mounted John Sayles' horse in the owner's presence and rodc away. Sayles called upon him to stop. McClung pretended as if he did not hear: whereupon Savles drew a revolver and shot him killing him instantly.
