Samuel McChesney was born in Northern Ireland (believed to be in County Armagh) on 22 Jun 1753 to James McChesney and Sarah Patterson. His parents and siblings all moved to the new English colony, America, settling in Virginia in about 1770.

15 May 1775, Samuel McChesney witnessed both an indenture for Walter McChesney of Augusta Co., VA, who purchased land in Deed Book 21, p 145 and also a 9 Mar 1793 indenture in same county for Robert McChesney. James McChesney also witnessed it.

In about 1777, he married Susannah D. Berry, the daughter of Thomas Berry and Esther McClure Ward. They had their only known child: Thomas, 2 Jul 1778 to 30 Oct 1836. Thomas married 3 times: Sallie Sharpe, 1799; Patsy Hall, 1818 and Susan McChesney, 1830.

Samuel was living in Rockbridge County, VA in 1778 and in 1781 and owned land in Washington County, VA at the time. He is on the 1782 Washington County, VA tax lists thereafter. Samuel was a Captain and patriot and contributed to the war efforts in the Rockbridge County, Virginia Commissioner's book(s): V, p. 80. He was a "Company Commander in Campbell Co. Militia."

He was the Executor of the will of his father in law, Thomas Berry, on 31 Aug 1798.

On 22 Nov 1800, grantee, Saml McChesney, purchased 150 acres on a branch of Holstein River, adjoining his own land, in Washington Co., VA.

Samuel made his will out on 25 Mar 1803, in Washington County, Virginia. It's recorded in Will Book 3, pages 403-405.
