Samuel Chillington's origins have yet to be established. He claimed in the 1851 census to have been born at Chillington in Somerset, whilst the age quoted on his death and burial records suggests he was born around 1778. If he was born at Chillington at that time, there is a known gap in the baptisms recorded there between 1761 and 1780.
Samuel was married on 29th March 1802 in the nearby parish of Winsham to Mary Forsey. They had several children together at Winsham, before returning to Chillington.
Mary died early in 1841 and was buried at Chillington. A couple of months later, the 1841 census finds Samuel living in Chillington with his youngest son, William, and working as an agricultural labourer. The situation was similar in 1851, with Samuel living at Clay Lane in Chillington with William, who by that time was married with children of his own.
Samuel was buried at Chillington on 17th December 1854. He was said to be 76 when he died.
