Family Life
Shortly after their marriage, Samuel and Elizabeth settled at Tedburn St Mary, near Crediton in Devon. This is where we find them living in the 1841[2] census along with 10 month out James. Samuel's occupation is shown as agricultural labourer.
Ten years later in the 1851[3] census we find the family living at St Martins Lane, Crediton. Samuel's occupation is still shown as agricultural labourer and there are 4 more children in the family, George, Sarah, Ellen and Susan. It appears that James is no longer living with his family.
Samuel and Elizabeth went on to have another four children and although continued to live in Crediton, by 1881 they had moved to Fordton Road.
Samuel was a farm labourer for Mr G H Chaplis, but in June 1883, after having words with the foreman Samuel lost his job. The family received help from the parish of 2s 6d a week whilst Samuel tried to find work, which was hard at his time of life. Just before Christmas in December 1883 Samuel was order in front of the Parish Board and told that no further money would be granted him until he took a smaller house in which to live. He paid £5 10s a year for his house.
During the Christmas period Samuel was very despondent, often expressing his fears as to how he would get by. It was these events which led Samuel to take his own life. His wife Elizabeth, after returning from a trip to Upton, found her husband hanging from a cord tied to the banister. An inquest was held into his death, a verdict was returned that Samuel committed suicide whilst in an unsound state of mind.[8]
