[Mary Elizabeth Giddings from 2787254.ged] REFN282 Story about Benjamen Franklin by Augustus Griffin "About two years pr evious to this (viz. 1755), Dr. Benjamen Franklin passed through the Island f rom Brooklyn to Southold Harbor, and in a carriage by his own construction. It was so contrived, with clockwork or machinery of peculiar make, that a bel l would be struck at the termination of every twenty rods. By this means, th e Doctor measured the distance accurately -- his object, no doubt, being to a scertain the length of the island, and it seems a little strange that he did not proceed to the end. He stopped at the Inn of my grandfather, Samuel Gr iffin, at the Harbor (120 miles from Brooklyn, as the road was at that day) a nd who took him, the following day, across the Sound to New London. The Doct or was on the way to Boston to visit his widowed mother." References
