[edit] About Samuel FriedlandSamuel Nathan Friedland was born on 9 August 1895 in Pennsylvania, the son of Russian immigrant Morris Friedland and his wife Matilda, who had immigrated to America in 1888. Samuel Friedland's entry into the supermarket industry started in the 1920's when he opened his first Reading Giant Price Cutter supermarket, which led to the opening of additional stores over the next 20 years. In the late 1940's, they were re-branded under the name Food Fair markets. In the late 1950's and early 1960's, Food Fair grew through the acquisition of Setzer's Supermarkets, a 40-store chain in the Jacksonville, Florida, area and the J.M. Fields Department Stores, a chain of discount department stores in New England, which were re-modeled to include a J.M. Fields, Food Fair or Panty Pride grocery store, some of the first "combination department/grocery stores" in their marketing area.In the 1960's, most of the Food Fair markets were converted to the Pantry Pride banner, and over the next several years, the chain grew through additional acquisitions of Fox Markets, which operated stores in California and Nevada in 1967, Hills Supermarkets of New York in 1976 and the remaining 17 stores of Philadelphia-based Penn Fruit Company. In 1978, Pantry Pride fall victim to financial problems and filed for bankruptcy protection, and over the next 20+ years, entered a period of slow decline as it sold off stores until its final stores were either closed or sold by 2000. Samuel Friedland would not survive to see the final collapse of his supermarket empire, as he passed away on 9 April 1985 in Miami Beach, Florida. References
