Samuel Hottel Feasel

Facts and Events
There appears to be considerable confusion about Samuel Hottel Feasel's family, and for good reason. He is listed in the 1860 census with wife Leah (born about 1812) and 7 children:
- Elizabeth, born about 1837
- Samuel, born about 1843
- William A, born about 1844
- Mary M, born about 1848
- Mahala, born about 1851
- Alexander, born about 1853
- Mary Ellen, born about 1858
Elizabeth's death record identifies her as the daughter of Samuel Feasel and Leah Farmer.
Alexander's death record identifies his parents as Sam Feasel and May Parmer - presumably Mary Farmer in the original.
Taken together with the census record and the fact that Leah died in 1883, it suggests that Samuel Feasel was married to Leah (Mary) Farmer from the mid 1830's until his death in 1862.
However, William's death record identifies his parents as Samuel Feasel and Laura Cotter. Several possibilities exist, such as:
- Elizabeth's death record gives her step-mother instead of her mother. This would allow for Samuel's first wife to have been Laura Cotter and the mother of his children up to at least William.
- William's death record is incorrect.
- William was the son of a different Samuel Feasel, living with this family in 1860.
- William was the result of an affair, and living with his father in 1860.
Note also that Samuel's death record identifies his father as John Feasel. Also, the death record of a Mary Ellen Devany (born Apr 1856) identifies her father as John Fissell. Possibly Samuel and/or Mary Ellen in the 1860 census were not Samuel Hottel Feasel's own children.
Finally, if both William's and Samuel's birth dates (as given in their death records) are correct, they were not sons of the same mother.
The tree listed on this page has Samuel Feasel married twice, but with Leah Farmer being his first wife - this is not consistent with the 1860 census record, Leah's death in 1883 (unless they were divorced), and Alexander's death record.
