Chapman, Samuel, Tolland. Will dated 25 June, 1745. I Samuel Chapman of Tolland, having undertaken an expedition against our enemies whereby I look upon myself as more immediately exposed than in my common business, do make this my last will and testament: I give to my wife Hannah Chapman, in lieu of her dowry, 1-3 part of the improvement of all my improved lands, together with the use of two rooms in my dwelling house as she shall choose, and the use of 1-4 part of my barn so long as she shall remain my widow. And when the time shall commence, either by the death or marriage to another, my will is that the use of the sd. land, house and barn shall belong to those of my children that I shall hereafter give the same unto. And also I give to my sd. wife 1-3 part of my moveable estate to be at her own dispose forever. Item. I give to my son Samuel Chapman, he paying the several sums hereafter ordered to him, my house and barn with other housing, together with that part of my homestead lying on the north side of the road, beginning at a cross fence about 30 rods west of my house and running the range of the sd. fence until it come to the land I lately bought of Mr. Dimmock, and to extend east of Mr. Dimmock's land; only reserving 1 acre on the north side to my son Simon as shall be most convenient for him for his building, if he live to have occasion therefore. And also I give to my son Samuel all my lands lying on the south side of the road on which my dwelling house stands, being about 220 acres; and also 100 acres of land lying near the northeast corner of Tolland, together with 38 acres of land lying at Wintonbury in Windsor; and also about 70 acres of undivided land in sd. Tolland. Item. I give to my son Elijah Chapman, when he shall come to the age of 21 years, 210 acres of land lying on the westerly end of my farm adjoining John Bacor's, and land I bought of Col. Whiting; also the lott called Whipple lott. Item. I give to my son Simon, when he shall come to the age of 21 years, the remaining part of the lands I bought of Col. Whiting, with 20 acres I lately purchased of my neighbor Dimmock, and the acre I reserved on the north side of Samuel's land, he my son Simon discharging (when he comes of age) my son Samuel of a legacy of £50 given to him by his uncle Simon Chapman, which Samuel by sd. will is obliged to pay. I give to my daughter Sarah Kingsbury, to be paid by my son Samuel, £160 old tenor money. I give to my daughter Hannah Chapman £400, which I order my son Samuel to pay. Item. I give to my daughter Mary Chapman £400, which I order my son Samuel to pay unto her. Item. I give to my daughter Ruth Chapman £400, which payment I order my sons Samuel and Elijah to pay. Item. I give to my daughter Margaret £400, which I order my sons Samuel and Elijah to pay in equal proportions. And whereas, it is apparent that our paper currency is of uncertain value, I order that the above sd. legacies be paid to my daughters at the rate of silver at 33 shillings the ounce. I appoint my wife Hannah Chapman and son Samuel Chapman and my son Elijah Chapman executors.
