    Nat'l Archives: Application for pension for service in the War of 1812. State of Iowa, County of Jefferson, ss: On this 1st day of June 1871 personally appeared before me SAMPSON SMiTH, aged seventy-six years, a resident of Locust Grove Twp., Jefferson Co. Iowa. His wife's name was ELIZABETH BONNER to whom he was married in Bath CO. Virginia, on or about the 22nd of July 1816. He is the identical SAMPSON SMITH who was enrolled in Capt. EDMOND SHERMAN'S Co. of the 5th Regiment of Virginia Militia and Forces at Norfolk about the first of September 1814 and was honorably discharged at Fort Nelson near Norfolk on the 15th of February 1815 or at the close of the war, that he served as fourth Sergeant in his Company
