SAMANTHA JOY BEGAN MARRIAGE IN A SOD HOUSE

Samantha Caroline Joy, eldest child of Charles L. and Hattie A. (Boston) Buswell, was born April 27, 1885, at Highland Kansas.

At an early age, she was taken to Pawnee Rock, Neb., to live with her grandparents, James and Caroline Boston. By the time she had reached the age of 8 she moved with her grandparents to Smith County, settling on a farm in the Dewey community.

She received her education in the Dewey schools and started her Christian life in the Dewey church. After marriage, she attended church at Thornburg, then later at the Methodist Church in Reamsville until her health prevented attendance.

She was united in marriage to Otto Clyde Joy of Reamsville on Dec. 21, 1905. They settled on a farm near Reamsville, which remained her home until she entered Carpenter Manor 8 years ago. They lived the first 12 years of married life in a sod house.

Four children were born to this union, all of whom survive. Her husband preceded her in death Feb. 25, 1944. She remained on the farm that had always been their home. Her son and family joined her a few years later on the farm.

Her life was dedicated to her home, family, friends, and her church. One of her greatest pleasures was the time spent with her grandchildren. She enjoyed working with her flowers, garden, and handwork.

Surviving are her four children: Hattie and husband Walter Ogle of Norton; Lorene, Mrs. Harry Kite of Stockton, CA; Charles Edwin and wife Inez of Smith Center; Jessie and husband John Wolf Jr. of Norton. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. A brother, Clare Buswell lives at Big Fork Montana. A host of nieces, nephews, and friends also are saddened by her death.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, James, Ray, Hobart, Vern and Lawrence Buswell; and a son-in-law Harry Kite.

Memorial services were March 6 at 2 p.m. from Simmons Chapel in Smith Center with Rev. John Bland officiating. Maxine Rush was vocalist and Frances Gibson accompanied.

Casket bearers were Gary Ogle, Richard Joy, Ronney Joy, Russell Wolf, Ernest Wolf, and Roger Wolf. Flowers were tended by Eula Gawerecki, Wilma Bostelmann, Karen Reedy and Nancy Bonawitz. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery, Smith Center.
