challenged parents: James Smith and Hannah Parker (1)
There is a Sam Houston Smith listed as a son of General James & Hannah Parker Smith in the book: War of 1812 Veterans in Texas by Mary Smith Fae. She wrote that Sam Houston Smith married Pamela Coates. This author also has the incorrect parents for General James Smith. There is no documentation in the book telling where she got her information.
Rusk probate has a Susan B. Coats with a Oliver P. Coats and Martha & et al
1856 . p. 313 it says there are Coats and Coats land in Carroll Co. MS
1870 census for Carroll Co. MS lists a Samuel H. Smith 5 years old born MS
with his mother P. G. 40 AL There is a James and a Sarah and I think a
John--can't really read that name. There is a 3 year old, too so the father
prob died between 1867-1870
The probate records stop in the books in 1868! There are only 3 or 4 books
in Carroll Co. There were too many Samuel Smiths in MS in 1860 census for my
time today to check [all of the children were born in MS and there was a 18
year old.]
There was a William B. Coats and wife Susan in 1852 in the Carroll County
Chauncery minute book 1
There is not a Sam Houston Smith or any combination of those names who received any inheritance from General James Smith, and he is not found in census records or any other probates other than a reference to a Sam Smith in the annual report voucher #10 paid from the estate of Thomas & Frances Smith Timmons decd, daughter of General James Smith. Estate of Mary A. Timmons et. al. p. 424 filed Jan 28, 1858. It is unknown whether this Sam Smith is the Sam Houston Smith who is supposed to be the son of General James & Hannah Parker Smith.
Census records: There is no son Sam Houston Smith in this 1820 census.

Sam Houston Smith is listed in the book: The War of 1812 Veterans in Texas by Mary Smith Fae, but there are no other documents to support his existence.
She wrote that Sam Houston Smith married Pamela Coates, but we cannot find a record of her or their marriage. This author also has the incorrect parents for General James SMITH. There is no documentation in the book telling where she got her information for this son. Other sources also have a Sam Houston SMITH listed as a child of James & Hannah Smith, but they may have gotten the information from the book by Mary Smith Fae.
Ken Smith also has a Sam Houston Smith with Pamela Coats on his website, but he doesn't put his sources for that information.

If Sam SMITH is a child of the SMITH family, he would have had to been born just after the 1830 census and moved out before the 1850 census. Or born after October 1839 because he was not named in James SMITH's deed to his family 15 Oct 1839. He would have had to move out before the 1850 census in either case.

The book War of 1812 Veterans in Texas by Mary SMITH FAE, states that Sam Houston Smith married a Coates girl, but no researcher we have been in contact with have found her, either..
