Russell A. Hurn Russell A. Hurn, age 89, of Joplin, passed away at 5:15 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2005, at a local health care center after a long illness.

Born Feb. 6, 1916, in Newton County, he was the son of the late Harvey James Hurn and Golda Hope Benintendi Hurn and lived in the Joplin area most of his life. After graduation he worked in El Dorado, Kan., and then became a land surveyor for the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was a lineman for Southwestern Bell for several years and was employed by Charles (Be Be) Rebozo in Miami, and Coral Gables, Fla., until 1950. For 20 years he operated Home Oil Station formerly located at 7th and St. Louis in Joplin. A U.S. Postal contractor he transported bulk mail until retiring due to ill health in 1989. He was a Baptist. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

On Aug. 24, 1951, he married Tommy Lou Gilbert at Bentonville, Ark. She survives.

Additional survivors include three sons, James Hurn, of Joplin, David Hill and wife, Debi, of Nevada, Mo., and Jhan Hurn and wife, Laura, of Joplin; a brother, Bert C. Hurn and wife, Dixie, of Neosho; a sister, Maxine Mitchell and husband, Roy, of Neosho; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Wilma Moore and Fern Fortney.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at Parker Chapel. Entombment will follow in Ozark Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. Saturday until service time at the mortuary.
