"Rosewell Saltonstall was born at New London on January 19, 1701/2, the oldest of the sons of Governor Gurdon Saltonstall (a.b. 1684) to survive infancy. His mother was Elizabeth Rosewell, the governor's second wife. At Harvard, Rosewell established new records for disorder, culminating his career in his senior year by joining Thomas Oliver … in burglarizing Tutor Sever's chamber. His parting shot was in Tutor Flynt's direction:

:Apr 21 1720 Saltonstal Senior impudently firing a pistol twice at the foot of my Stairs after nine a clock was Ordered not to make the Valedictory Oration to which he [was] Chosen & his Class called up & ordered to Chuse another in his room he having disqualified himself for that honour by his insulting carriage & Impudent Lying.

When he returned to take his second degree with his class in 1723, he denied, as a son of the Connecticut governor should, that Potestas Regalis absoluté est Jure Divino.

On April 6, 1727, Saltonstall became the husband of Mary, widow of Elisha Lord and daughter of the Honorable John Haynes (a.b. 1689). They settled at Hartford, where Saltonstall was captain of the first trainband. By 1733 they had removed to Branford, the home of his maternal ancestors, and were building a pew in the church. He was promptly appointed a justice of the peace for New Haven County, for 'He was highly esteemed … being a man of irreproachable Christian character, and amiable in all the relations of life.' While on a visit to his brother Gurdon at New London he was taken with a fever which carried him off on October 1, 1738. He lies in the family tomb at New London. His daughters married Yale men."
