"1. Rev. Roger Newton died Milford 7 June 1683. He married 1644 Mary Hooker who died Milford 14 February 1675/6 (ES) dau of Rev. Thomas and Susannah. Rev. Roger was educated at Kings College, Cambridge, England 1636 and entered Harvard in 1638. He studied theology in the home of Rev. Thomas Hooker in Hartford, Conn. and later married his daughter. He was the first pastor of Farmington, Conn. (1652-1657) and was the second pastor of Milford, installed 22 August 1660. He served for nearly 23 years in the Milford church."

"Roger (Newton), Farmington, the first min. m. at Hartford, Mary, eldest d. of Rev. Thomas Hooker, wh. d. 4 Feb. 1676, had at H. Samuel, bapt. 20 Oct. 1646; was ord. the day the ch. was form. 13 Oct. 1652, there had John, bapt. June 1656, but not 6, as print. in Geneal. Reg. XI. 324; and prob. other ch. bef. or aft. or both. He was dism. 1657, came to Boston, in Oct. to emb. for Eng. The ship in wh. he had tak. pass. was with ano. for the same destinat. detain. sev. days by head winds in the outer harbor, and he was invit. by letter to town on a special serv. A lamentab. superstit. encourag. the shipmaster and some others, as in Hull's Diary, p. 185, is told, to consent to his leav. the voyage, 'as think. his presence some cause of the cross wind.' I hope he got passage, without contra. wind, in a later ship, and return, he went to Milford, where was inst. 22 Aug. 1660, and d. 7 June 1683. His will, of 12 Mar. bef. names Samuel, Roger, Susanna, John, Ezekiel, bapt. 1660; Sarah, 1662; Alice, 1664; and Mary; but in some cases the order of success. is not ascert. His d. Susanna m. John Stone of M.; and Sarah m. 4 July 1683, John Wilson of New Haven."
