Robert Albert Wiseman was born on 11th November 1873 at Luton in Bedfordshire, son of Elizabeth Wiseman, formerly Woodward, and her husband Henry Wiseman, a hat blocker. Both the 1881 and 1891 censuses find Robert living with his parents and siblings at Taylor Street in Luton. In 1891 he was also working as a straw hat blocker.
In 1896, aged 22, he married Clara Kempson, who was 20 and also from Luton. She already had a daughter, Emily, born the previous year, who subsequently took the surname Wiseman; it's possible that Robert was also Emily's father. Robert and Clara went on to have a further thirteen children born in Luton between 1896 and 1920.
The 1901 census finds Robert, Clara and their children living at New Town Street to the south of Luton, with Robert working as a straw hat blocker. At the 1911 census they had moved a short distance to Farley Hill. Clara reported in that census that four of their children had died.
At the outbreak of the Second World War, Robert, Clara and their youngest son were living at 124 Wellington Street in the centre of Luton, and Robert was described as a felt hat steamer.
Robert died in 1956, aged 83. Clara outlived him by just over three years.
