ROBERT TYNDALL enlisted in the Indiana Volunteer Battery in 1898 to join in the fight against Spain. He rose to the rank of Captain, serving in Puerto Rico.

The future general had a common experience with his future wife; both having lived in Central America at the same time. It is assumed that they did not know each other at the time.

From 1917 to 1919 Colonel Tyndall commanded the First Regiment Field Artillery of Indiana which became the 150th Field Artillery, 42nd "RAINBOW DIVISION". During World War I he commanded this regiment in five sector operations on the French Front. The famous Rainbow Division was founded by Gen. Douglas MacArthur. Tyndall was commissioned a Brigadier General in 1921. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal by his very distant relative, General Pershing (see photo this page). General Pershing also has a WeRelate.org page. Certainly the two generals had no idea that they were distantly related!

After the conclusion of World War I, Tyndall was elected National Teasurer of the American Legion. He and his wife were members of many civic and social organizations. He attained the 33rd degree of the Masons.

In 1942, he was elected Mayor of Indianapolis, dying in office in 1947. The Tyndall Armory in downtown Indianapolis is named after General Tyndall.
