Collins claims that this Robert was the son of Robert Sheffield and Eleanor Burnham and brother of Sir John Sheffield who accompanied Prince Edward in 1356.

  5. The Peerage (1735 edition), The Gentleman's Magazine (80:2:35), published in 1810, and A topographical account of the isle of Axholme (1:82), published in 1815, all present the same pedigree, presumably all copied from the same source. This pedigree shows that this Robert was the son of Robert Sheffield and Eleanor Burnham and brother of Sir John Sheffield who accompanied Prince Edward in 1356. By careful estimation of birth years (Sir John born about 1340 and Robert his brother born about 1360), this would be feasible. However, The Gentleman's Magazine, in presenting its version of the pedigree, claims that Robert succeeded his father, suggesting he was the elder brother. Therefore, it seems likely that there were up to 3 generations missing between the father of Sir John Sheffield and the Robert Sheffield who married Catherine Beltoft. Note that this (and other errors in the published pedigree) call into question which generation some of the wives were in.
