Beginnings and 1850 census

Robert R. Reeves was born in South Carolina around 1810 possibly to William and Mary Reeves. William can be found in the 1840 U.S. census population schedules in Jasper county, Mississippi and both can be found in the 1850 census. There are no Reeves listed in the County tax rolls, 1834-1841, for Jasper County, Mississippi, but Robert is listed in the 1843 County Tax Rolls. This suggests that the family settled the region about 1840. There are rumors that Robert married twice, but there is only evidence for one wife, Mary aged 25 from Mississippi, who can be found in the 1850 census entry. The census also tells us that he was a farmer.

1860 Census

In the 1860 U.S. Census population schedule, we find Robert R. Reeves listed as a laborer in Funny Louis Bayou, Catahoula parish, Louisiana without his wife. Unfortunately, the birthplaces listed in this census record are unreliable because all of the children are listed as having been born in Louisiana which is contradicted by the 1850 census.
