Information on Rev. Robert Miller

Rev. Robert MILLER b. Scotland 1730, graduated Edinburgh University, came to America abt 1755, became first pastor of Waxhaw Presbyterian Church Lancaster Co. SC, where he met and married Jane Pickens about 1756. The Waxhaw church was built on the plantation of Rev. Rbt. Miller, who sold his land to a Mr. Barnett, reserving 4 ½ acres for the church; in 1758 this land was transferred to the church trustees for the Waxhaw congregation; trustees named as Robert Davis, Robert Ramsey, John Linn, Samuel Dunlap, Henry White, witnesses as Robert McClenachan, John Crockett and Andrew Pickens. The Millers moved to Abbeville Co. [area] SC; descendants moved to MS Territory around 1800.

Children of Rbt. Miller and Jean Pickens:

1. Robert Miller b. 1760
2. Ann Miller b. 1762 m. (Lt) Robert Simmons ca 1782 Abbeville SC moved to Natchez (LA) area (MS Territory) 1802 and later to Pike Co. MS. [This is when my Simmons family m. into the Miller family; some of their older children remained in TN including son John our ancestor]
3. Andrew Miller b. 1764 SC d. ca 1802 Abbeville District; children named in estate settlement included a daughter, JANE, her birth date not given, [presumably in 1780s, so possibly could be your Jane (tho poss.10 yrs younger than John) if Wm. Craig born 'bef. 1798'].
4. Ebenezer Miller b. 1767 d. 1848 MS, m. Elizabeth Reid.
5. JANE MILLER b. 5 Feb 1769. "Nothing further known of her." [Which seems strange as there is pretty complete follow-up on the rest of the children; could she have switched to Methodism on her marriage and been 'struck out' of the family; her parents being known fanatics in other areas may have disowned her?] Dorothy Thurman <Thurman@@pbworld.com> writes: Yes, there was a Jane Miller born a few children after Ann in 1769 died Apr 28, 1848 in Pontotoc MS. The info I have is contradictory. One report was that she never married. Another record says she married Norwood Laird in S.C.
6. Margaret Miller b. 1771 SC m. Felix HUGHES 1791 [went to MS]
7. Joseph Miller b.1775 SC m. Margaret Reid (sis to above Eliz. Reid)
8. Dr. John Henry Miller b. 1777 SC m. Jane Bonneau Pickens dau of Gen. Andrew Pickens [therefore, a first cousin]. [Jane/Jean/Jeanne Bonneau being the name of the wife (a prior widow) of a Pickens progenitor who lived and married in France in late 1600s, probably the source of all the Janes in this family]

Note the education of Rev. Rbt Miller, Edinburgh University in Scotland, which at that time would have been in the classic languages, and probably passed down to his children, although possibly not the daughters. I wonder if your John Craig, or possibly his father, might have been a graduate of Edinburgh Univ. given the classical educations and connection to the old Scotch Presbyterian Church? I gave a quick look through on both Pickens and Miller histories to see if I could find any mention of the married names of John Craig's sisters, but did not find any. As for your Jane Miller's probable birth date: Jane b. 1769 could well be within the timeframe of John Craig's birth. It would certainly be enlightening to find any records of the Waxhaw Presbyterian Church to see if any Craigs were there; perhaps the names of the trustees given above might tie in with your family somewhere?
