R. A. McDowell appears on the roster of the Chickasaw Guards, Company H, 11th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry Volunteers, CSA, mustered into state service March 19, 1861, mustered into service at Lynchburg, Virginia, May 15, 1861. The record reflects that R. A. McDowell was 1st sergeants, promoted to 3rd, 2nd, and 1st lieutenant, and entitled to be captain after Gettysburg (Captain Jamison Moore was killed at Gettysburg on July 5, 1863). This record asserts that he was in all battles and never wounded. Other sources suggest he was captured. The National Parks Service's Civil War Soldiers and Sailors Database, confirms his unit and rank.
