    Robert was a son of Andrew & Isabelle McCleary. After his father died his mother and the children moved from Pennsylvania to North Carolina. Robert married Maria Abigail McDowell in Mecklenburg County, and they were the parents of nine children, Peggy, Mary, Hannah, Isabella, Abigail, Samuel, Eleanor, Andrew, and James McCleary.

    General Robert McCleary, aka Robert McClary, served in the Revolutionary War in "Civil Service" in the capacity of assessor and juror for Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, according to the Briscoe, Mecklenburg County Court Minutes Book I.
