Robert Lanier b. Nov. 12, 1746 Lunenburg Co. Va. d. May 4, 1785 Surry Co. N.C. he m. in Butte Co. N.C. June 12, 1775 Jane Pattillo, daughter of Henry Pattillo, Presbyterian Minister. Robert Lanier was a Colonel in the Revolutionary Army, serving as Commissary Officer; for a detailed account of his services, see N.C. State Records. In 1777 Governor Caswell appointed him, with Joseph Winston (his brother-in-law) to treat with the Cherokee Indians; he was a member of the Assembly from 1771 until 1784 when he declined to serve longer; he was Treasurer of the Salisbury District, N.C. when he died 1785.
