SMITHVILLE - Robert R. Klopfenstein, 67, 7395 Five Points Road, Smithville, Ohio, died Monday, August 2, 2004, at Wooster Community Hospital, following a long illness.

An outdoor sunset funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, August 6, 2004, at Smithville Mennonite Church in Smithville with the Revs. Richard Ross and Randy Murray officiating. Graveside services for the family will take place in Smithville Mennonite Church Cemetery immediately following the sunset funeral service.

Robert was born in Milford, Nebraska, on August 3, 1936, the son of Roy and Ella (Stauffer) Klopfenstein. From age 10 until he went to college, he was raised by foster parents, Ira and Delphine Amstutz. He was united in marriage to Janet Mumaw on August 16, 1957, in Orrville. She survives.

He graduated from Apple Creek High School and from Goshen College in 1958 with a bachelor’s degree in education. He was a former junior high school history teacher in the Dalton, Orrville and Norwayne school districts for 27 years. He retired in 1986.

Robert was a member of Smithville Mennonite Church, Kidron Historical Society and a member and former chairman of the Wayne County Democratic Party. He was active in his community and was a devoted father to his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Janet, he is survived by daughters, Debbie (Gene) Schaaf, Anne Rutt and Sharon (Doug) Noah, all of Wooster, Jayne (Greg) Cardell of Goshen, Ohio; sons, R. Wynn Klopfenstein of Atlanta, Ga., and Keith Klopfenstein of Smithville, Ohio; grandchildren, Sean Rutt and Sarah Jayne Cardell; brothers, Clifford (Carolyn) Klopfenstein of Archbold, Ohio, Gene (Ruth) Klopfenstein of Pettisville, Ohio and Richard Klopfenstein of Tennessee; sister, Eileen (Ronnie) Adams of Mission Viejo, Calif.; foster brothers, I. Glenn (Lynn) Amstutz and Elliot (Dianne) Amstutz of Colorado; foster sisters, Rhoda (Ralph) Imhoff of Arizona, Gloria (Dale) Landis of Michigan and Donna Amstutz of Wyoming; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, foster parents and foster sister, Rose Marie Biddier.
