From an article in the Arkansas Historical Quarterly [no citation]:

Dedman arrived in Princeton in 1851 and studied law under Judge F. W. Compton. He enlisted under Solon Borland in what became the 3rd Arkansas Cavalry under W. T. M. Holmes, then under O. C. Gray. He took charge of Co. A when Capt Gray was allowed to resign in 1864 at Atlanta, in order to join the navy. Dedman was later a lawyer and judge.
