Byers, Robert Oliver

Robert Oliver Byers, M.D. Robert Oliver Byers, M.D., died Sunday afternoon, January 16, 2005, at home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida of cardiac arrest. He was 84. Born in Turtle Creek, near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he received his medical degree from the University of PIttsburgh where he was a member of Pitt Men’s Glee Club. After medical school, her served as a captain and doctor in the United States Army during World War II. For many years he practiced medicine and raised a family in Erie, Pennsylvania. Dr. Byers was an avid golfer, and was one of the original members of Lake Shore Country Club in Erie, Pennsylvania. He was a prominent local physician and was a past president of the Erie County Medical Society. He was a member of St. Julia’s Catholic Church. Upon retiring from the medical profession in 1984, he and his wife moved to their oceanfront condominium in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Florida where they were parishioners of Assumption Catholic Church. Married in 1943 to Rita Murray Byers, they had eight children. He leaves his wife Rita, sister Wilha Evans of Louisville, Kentucky, son Daniel Byers of Erie, Pennsylvania, daughter Susan Block of Columbus, Ohio, daughter Chris Reinoehl of Memphis, Tennessee, daughter Tina Shimpeno of Davie, Florida, daughter Holly Byers of Margate, Florida, son Scott Byers of Puyallup, Washington and son Erie Byers of St. Simons Island, Georgia. Another daughter, Gretchen Byers is deceased. Other family members include eighteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Dr. Byers to the American Heart Association. Published in the Erie Times-News on 1/19/2005.
