Facts and Events
Robert Buckner originally co-owned the land upon which Fredericksburg, Virginia was founded. He and John Royston laid out the first plans for the town in the 1720s, though the House of Burgesses soon afterward expropriated the property and essentially transferred responsibility for the project to Henry Willis. We know that Robert Buckner was a grandson of John Buckner from a Spotsylvania deed record (Spots. Land Patents Book 15, p. 281) and the same land was previously said to be owned by Thomas Buckner and John Royston in 1722 (Henings Statutes, v. 4, p. 112), so we can reasonably conclude that Robert inherited the land as Thomas' son. Not much else is known about Robert, so he probably died in the late 1720s or early 1730s. |
