Richard was born in Washington Territory four years after Joseph and Carrie came to the area. He grew up on a ranch near Prescott, Washington. He completed eight years of school, and did some ninth-gra work (algebra, which he liked). He spent most of his life working on wheat ranches, either working for his father or someone else. He worked in California during winter for some years as a night watchman for a cotton gin.
