"1. Richard Sanford, b. 1594, England; d. Swansea, Mass.; m. Margery _____, d. 1640. in Boston. It is evident that his wife and some of his children came with him to Boston. Savage, in his great work, states that he was a laborer, meaning that he had no trade. He was admitted an inhabitant of Boston and asked for a lot Dec. 22, 1640. (Boston Rec. Com. Report, Vol. 2, part 1, p. 59.) He owned a house and lot (Ibd. part 2. p. 13). He was 56 years old as shown by his oath Jan. 6, 1650 (Ibd. Vol. 32, p. 374). On Jan. 30, 1641, was admitted to the First Church and on June 2, 1641, made a freeman. He had a son Robert, (see Suffolk County Deeds, Book XI, page 22), also a son John (see probate of his will Apr. 24, 1677), also a son Thomas (see Deeds, Book XI, pp. 18 and 52), also a daughter Mary, who married Aug. 25, 1656, Edward Turner. I am quite disposed to think he had a son James, who died in 1661. He and his son Robert sold their property and removed to Swanzey, Mass., in 1678."
