King in Marriages of Richmond County 1668 - 1853, states he was the son of Robert Mitchell, Gent., The bondsman to his marriage was Anthony Sydnor, Sr. The bride was the daughter of Anthony and Elizabeth (Dew) Sydnor (q.v.). Richard Mitchell (1728-1781) and his wife Ann Sydnor (1728-1793) died childless; his will was proved in Lancaster County and hers in Richmond County. He was the son of of Robert Mitchell, Gentleman, (1684-1748), of Lancaster County whose will is of record and Bible record in VSL:AD#25212. WB#8, p. 163; Lee, 158; Hayden p. 92; quoting letter 11 October 1952. In 1775, he was elected to the 22-member Lancaster County Committee of Safety which assumed the executive role after the 1776 collapse of the Royal government in Virginia (Jett, p. 110). In 1776, he was apointed High Sheriff for Lancaster County. (Jett, p. 113). Will of RIchard Mitchell, dated 14 February 1779, recorded 20 September 1781, Lancaster County Will Book 20, p. 207. He had only one child, Robert, who died as an infant. His will names nephews Richard Mitchell “my land and plantation whereon I now live [n Lancaster County] and nephew Robert Mitchell all lands in Richmond and Northumberland County, and their sisters Susannah Glasscock and Hannah Mitchell. Also names deceased sister Sarah Chinn’s children. Sisters Frances Sydnor, Elizabeth Fauntleroy, Judith Glasscock. Executors were nephews Robert and Richard Mitchell. No witnesses. Ann Mitchell widow renounced by deed proved in Court all her right in her deceased husband’s will, 20 SEP 1781. (King, Marriages of Richmond County, p. 159). References
