Text: "Dr. Richard W. McLain, (1874-1961), son of Ira and Catherine S. (McCarthy) McLain of Cambria, came to Allen in 1902 and later had his practice in Quincy until after 1926. He served in the state legislature as a representative during the years of 1926-1930. About this time, his wife, Winifred Cobb, who was the daughter of Ira and Catherine Cobb, of Litchfield, died. Then as a result of his interest in religious work and since he was no longer able to carry on the full practice of a family doctor because of poor health, Dr. McLain started another career --that of chaplain and psychiatrist at Jackson and Ionia State Prisons which he followed until he retired. While in Allen, the McLains lived at 109 West Chicago with their two children, Leland and Margaret . The families in Allen remember his wity way of speaking and the sincere interest he had in them and their concerns."
