Louise McLain Shambaugh has that her last name was McCarty Marion Watt has: SOURCE CITATION: Page: Page 19 - 20 Date: 11 Jul 1997 Text: !Catherine Sidney McCarthy, born in Lewiston, October 27, 1844, came to Northwest Township with her parents at eight years of age . She attended District Number 7 School near the original Jacob Kintigh home and store." She was married at the age of sixteen to Ira Alzinus McLain, a neighbor farm boy, and immediately embarked on a serious career as homemaker, mother, nurse and manager of a comples household. For the first twelve years she was never without extra dependent relatives in her home, and was never to live entirely alone. She never enjoyed the pleasure and convience of any modern household utility. She never had a mechanical washing machine of any type, and patiently rubbed each piece clean on a common washboard. There was no telephone in her home. Fuel was universall y wood and the ashes were stored in a discarded cracker barrel out in the yard where they were watersoaked and gradually leached out, producing a lye solution used in making of soap. She mothered ten sons - her productive period extending over twenty eight years - all of whom were never home at the same time. Her entire life was fraught with adversity, poverty, illness and grief, but with innate resourcefullness, she surmounted the obstacles which plagued the routine existence of most pioneer rural housewives. As the wife of an itinerate preacher, she was a dependable, confident and forthright councellor. A calm, tactful individual, she gained the respect of all with whom she made contact." Title: THE HILLS of HOME Author: Robert K. Mclain Richard Turnock has that she was born Oct. 27, 1844 in Lewiston, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania and that she died March 2, 1914. References
