    D. Richard Lanier, fourth son of Sampson Lanier and Elizabeth Washington, was born about 1715 in Surry Co. He married before 1743, Lucy Briggs, daughter of Samuel and Mary (Bailey) Briggs. He married second, April 2, 1759, Ann (Petway) Mason, widow of Isaac Mason.
    Children of Richard Lanier, by Lucy Briggs:
    1. Richard Lanier, Jr., born by 1743. married Caty Quarles, proven by Deed of Gift from Hubbard Quarles to his son and daughter Lanier. (Bk. 10, p. 131). They had two sons, James and David, born Virginia, and a daughter Polly. Richard Lanier and family moved to Edgefield Co. S.C. before 1790, he died there 1797, and his sons went to Georgia.
    2. Mary Lanier, named in her Grandmother Briggs will. No records.
    3. A younger son born before 1750, mentioned in the will of Benjamin Briggs Will of that date.
    4. Susannah Lanier born in Sussex Co. Jan. 1776, married Jan. 3, 1793, as his second wife, William Adkins. They had a daughter and two sons.
    5. William Lanier born June 28, 1768 (Albemarle Parish Register). No records.
    6. James Lanier born Feb. 16, 1771 (Albemarle Parish Register), married in Sussex, Nancy ?, was an attorney; moved to Greensville Co. early 1799; died 1810 in Greensville Co. Left four children.
