Facts and Events
Richard came to America as an indentured servant from England in 1666, under Capt Thomas Truman.
He rose to Captain of the Horse Rangers on 3 Mar 1696. (Review of Maryland Archives on-line for Richard Brightwell records numerous actual court proceedings related to his service. It seems he headed the western rangers, another Captain headed the eastern rangers. Six to eight men and horses were activated and equipped by the actions of the General Assembly. He frequently asked for additional reimbursements.)
The Richard Brightwell's lived near the border of Charles and Prince George's counties, at Poplar Hills. It was in Charles County until 23 Apr 1696 when Prince George's county was formed, and Poplar Hills was located there. It appears Richard Brightwell gained ownership of Poplar Hill in about 1686 - specific confirmation continues to be sought. (S2)
