World War I Draft Registration Card says he was of medium height and build with brown eyes and hair.

"At the age of 16, Ralph S. started to go to sea the same as all the other brothers. About this time internal combustion engines began to be used. He took a great deal of interest in these engines and in 1909-1910 was an engineer aboard a yacht owned by John C. King of New York City which cruised from Virginia to Eastport, Maine. He came to Castine in 1911, founded and built Wardwell's Garage and Machine Company and in 1917 opened a wholesale and retail fish business, running numerous fishing boats. In 1921 he organized Wardwell Canning Company which put up blueberries and apples. At the same time he was owner of Wardwell's Sanitary Market and for a number of years Manager of the Branch of the Walco Trust Company at Castine. In addition he owned and operated a Real Estate and Insurance business; was Treasurer and helped operated Dice's Head Development Company in 1925; owned and opearted Hotel Pentagoet for a number of years; organized the Corporation Richland Peat Mines in 1940 under the Presidency of Dr. Frederick Pierce and as treasurer himself. Served as selectman of the town of Castine, Collector of of Taxes for the team, Master of Hancock Lodge No. 4 F and A; Treasurer of the Hancock Lodge No. 4, High Priest of the chapter of Castine, member of Anah Temple at Bangor, Maine and Assistant to the Potentate for a number of years.
