Ralph John Schaapman age 76 peacefully passed away at his residence Sunday February 22nd, 2004. Born March 10th, 1927 to Holland immigrants John and Gertrude Jepke Schaapman in New York City, New York he moved with his family to Southern California at a young age. He was raised and educated in the Burbank, California area and became a 1945 graduate of John Burroughs High School in Burbank, CA. Ralph joined the Navy following his graduation from High School serving his country honorably as a member of the Navy's Shore Patrol. While in the Navy, Ralph competed with the Navy's Boxing Team and became a Golden Glove Champion. After seventeen years he retired from the aerospace industry as a production control specialist, after working for both Rocket-dyne and McDonald-Douglas Corporations. Ralph was a talented craftsman who enjoyed working with wood, studying and repairing electronics and in his later years working with computers. He moved to Quincy, CA in 1990 from Sylmar, California drawen here by the beautiful countryside that he enjoyed to fish and backpack in. Ralph had been involved with the Sylmar Chamber of Commerce for a number of years. Ralph is survived by his caring family to include his son Russell Schaapman of Quartz Hills, CA, daughters, Christina Kamps-Thurston of Moreno Valley, CA, Susan McNutt of Lancaster, CA, Tracy Clemons of Riverside, CA, ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He is preceeded in death by his loving wife Phyllis in 1990 along with two sisters. References
