Fruit pays well for Ralph Jackson, age 16 years. Strawberries and plums are both paying crops in Mayes County as every horticulturist knows. But, it is not every experienced hand that can produce the profit from a small strawberry bed and two plum trees that Ralph Jackson, 4-H Club member of Adair has realized this year.

Ralph has just been notified of winning on $22.00 in cash offered by Jim Parker of Tecumseh for exhibits at the Oklahoma State Fair and stories of how fruit was produced. This is by far the largest sum awarded to any single member of the fruit club this year and includes the highest sweepstakes prize of ten dollars, two report prizes of five dollars each for carefully written accounts of both strawberry and plum production and two individual exhibit prizes of one dollar each. So, Ralph is an all around champion this year.

In addition to these special awards, Ralph cleared $5.37 off the products of two plum trees and $15.80 from his strawberries. Both the prize winning stories will be included in the 1928 edition of the fruit club bulletin which is published by Mr. Parker and mailed to all fruit club members.

Ralph later graduated from Murray A & M College, Tishomingo, OK. He was active in 4-H Club work for eleven years. After college, he had a wide range of experiences in agriculture and civic affairs of the county. Ralph married Bonnie Fitten June 16, 1935. They had no children. Bonnie was a school teacher. Ralph a good farmer - later worked into the insurance business.

For six years he was Junior Assistant to the technician in the Soil Conservation Service doing surveying and engineering and later with E. I. DuPont & Co. as chief of a survey party surveying roads, property lines, laying out building sites, etc.

Later he was supervisor and treasurer of the Mayes County Soil Conservation Service for three years and is Secretary and Treasurer of the Adair Farmers Union Co-op. Also owns and operates a Grade A Dairy Farm. He is a member and assistant Sunday School Superintendent and Teacher of the young married people’s class in the Adair Methodist Church.
