Following the death of her mother on November 20, 1822, Rachel and the other Eastin children were cared for by her paternal grandmother, Mary Purnell Donelson. In a letter to John Coffee, dated December 21, 1822, Andrew Jackson wrote: "The little infant is growing finely and Mrs. D. watches over it and the balance of the little orphans with tenderness that displays much benevolence & goodness of heart and how much she feels the loss of her daughter."
