R.J. "Jerry" Duncan died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002 at Columbia Regional Hospital. He was 80. Mr. Duncan was born on Sept. 9, 1922 in Conway, Ark. to John A. and Lilli Mahan Duncan. On Sept. 26, 1942, he married Verlon Fitzjerrell in Sikeston. Mr. Duncan served on the European front and in Africa and the Middle East during World War II, earning the rank of sergeant first class. He was awarded two Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart. He was a life member and past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 280 and a member of The Elks Lodge No. 594. Visitation for Mr. Duncan will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Memorial Funeral Home. Services, conducted by the Rev. George Mummert, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Duncan is survived by a son, Larry Duncan of Columbia; two brothers, Glenn Duncan of Granite City, Ill., and Ralph Wayne Duncan of Memphis, Tenn; a sister, Joyce Bowen of Memphis, Tenn., and two grandchildren. His wife, two brothers and a son, Steve Duncan, died earlier. Memorials may be sent to VFW Post 280, 1508 Ashley St., Columbia, Mo. 65201.
