Polly Wardwell Hutchins, 84, a longtime philanthropist and former president of the Children's Memorial Hospital women's board, died Thursday, Dec. 21, in her Lake Forest home from Alzheimer's disease. Mrs. Hutchins met her husband, Chauncey, when they were both college students on the East Coast. Soon after they married in 1938, Mrs. Hutchins moved with him to Lake Forest where they remained. Soon after her arrival, Mrs. Hutchins became involved with many charitable causes and actively supported Chicago's cultural life. From 1960 to 1963, Mrs. Hutchins served as president of the Children's Memorial Hospital women's board. From 1969 to 1970, she was chairman of the committee that ran the Pro Am Golf Championship, the hospital's annual fundraiser in Lake Forest. An amateur pianist, Mrs. Hutchins served on the women's board of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for many years. In 1975 she was chairman of one of the first fundraising marathons for the orchestra. She also held positions on the boards of Cook County Hospital and the Chicago Historical Society. Mrs. Hutchins was a savvy organizer who was comfortable in the spotlight, her son Steve recalled. "She was dogged, she was organized and she was a very pretty lady," her son said. "So when you put it all together, she was a package of fundraising." Although her two favorite charities were Children's Memorial and the symphony board, Mrs. Hutchins believed her work for County Hospital was important because it often serves underprivileged patients. Other survivors include a daughter, Helen Reed; another son, Jim; a sister, Anne Wardwell; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 400 E. Westminster Rd., Lake Forest. -The Chicago Tribune, January 10, 2001
