DEATH: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- September 11, 2002 By Layla Bohm/News-Sentinel staff writer Lodi, CA CHP still investigating fatal Highway 12 crash California Highway Patrol officials are still investigating a traffic accident Monday on Highway 12 near Clements that resulted in the death of two people. Phyllis Aday-Odell, 56, and Daniel David McKay Jr., 24, both of Valley Springs, died when their vehicles collided head-on just west of Johnson Road, CHP Officer Ted Montez said. Earlier reports that a vehicle heading east swerved into the westbound lanes were incorrect, he said. Instead, it appeared that the westbound vehicle crossed over the center line and into the path of an eastbound vehicle, Montez said. A pickup truck following in the westbound lane swerved to avoid the collision and ran into the guard rail, but the driver was uninjured, Montez said. Both were wearing their seatbelts, Montez said. They had to be extricated from their vehicles by rescue crews, he said. Coroner's reports indicated Aday-Odell died of multiple blunt-force injuries and McKay died of a skull fracture caused by blunt trauma, said Sgt. Bill Fellers of the San Joaquin County Coroner's office.
