Phoebe Brown's origins have yet to be established. Her first confirmed sighting is on 9th August 1827 when she was married at Pagham on the Sussex coast to a gardener named William Challen. At the time of their marriage she was living in the nearby city of Chichester. The witnesses to the marriage were a John and Charlotte Brown, who were presumably related to her. Phoebe and William had four children baptised at Pagham between 1828 and 1834. Phoebe appears to have died some time between 1834 and 1836, although no obvious burial has been found local to Pagham. The most likely possibility found so far is at Camberwell, just south of London, where a 30 year old Phoebe Challin was buried in 1834. The name and age are plausible, but it is quite a way from Pagham to Camberwell. William remarried in 1836 and appears in the 1841 census living in Pagham. References
