BALDWIN, Philemon, [s. Caleb & Jerusha], b. Oct. 29, 1778. [2-95]
[Note: we are hampered by only having a town copy, and that copy apparently says what is given here (see [1]) though the gender was not specified and is an assumption of Barbour based on the name he read. However, the father's probate (this document) does not name such a son, but does name a daughter "Philenia Ellis" (hard to read, could be Philema Ellis?). The age at death of this daughter, corresponds well with this date of birth, and given the regular spacing of sibling births in Caleb & Jerusha's family, it is suspected if we could see the original birth record, we would see that it has been misread. Source:Baldwin, Charles Candee. Baldwin Genealogy, from 1500 to 1881, p. 347, has a entry for this alleged Philemon Baldwin, which we doubt, since he was alive when the estate was distributed, but did not participate. The Baldwin Genealogy, however, does attribute hims to Caleb (but has no daughter Philena). He was of Penn Yan, NY, later moving to Newburgh, OH, before 1810 (e.g., see [2]). In this last source, his son Philemon Jr. was said to be "born 1785", while sons Caleb and Rune had a double marriage in 1814, and as we can see from uniquely-named son Rune's Find A Grave memorial that he was born 1794, which facts tell us this was an older man would was born considerably before 1778 in order to have children of this age. It appears Caleb had no son named Philemon.]
