After the War of 1812, he moved his family to Walker County, Georgia, for about 8 years, then returned to Giles County, Tennessee. In 1849, with his wife and 3 children, he migrated to Texas. They were delayed at Memphis by high water and had to winter there, during which time their oldest son, Alexander, died of cholera, aged 28 yrs. In May 1850, they crossed the river and continued their journey, arriving in Dallas County in October 1850. David preempted 320 acres at what became Eagle Ford.
